It only took 5 months from 2020 for us to realize that a deadly virus isn't the only thing that could bring us closer to our deaths. Racism is the other. Just about when we took a breather to let things calm down in the middle of one of the biggest anti-racism moves in memory of George Floyd, subway Susan decides to show up. It was as if none of the political arguments, none of the 'setting-towns-on-fire', none of the protests, endless media coverage and that little share of people that shared black screens on their social media accounts was able to deliver the message that they wanted to deliver.
The 40 year old Lushchinskaya was filmed at the NYC subway who yelled profanities at the 24 year old Asian descent. As the modern-age "Karen" backed up, it was not a sign of retreat. She took out the umbrella out of her bag along with the key chain and began to hit the 24 year old Ayala. "she isn't even fighting you back" one person was heard. the key chain in Lushchinskaya's hand scraped Ayala's skin and she managed to call her a 'Mohammad Atta' a racial slur. The depth of this statement triggered certain passengers on the train as 'Mohommad Atta' is one of the masterminds behind the 9/11 attacks and she continued to spit and swear at the victim. I hope spitting and kicking will go a long way just like the knee-to-neck murder of George.
At first what I thought was that she had anger management issues. That was not the case. What the video shows us is mere harassment and attempted assault, and she was charged exactly for that. When we look at these different cases of racism what we see in common is the audacity to commit such things out in the public. When white privilege is real, it doesn't matter who is watching and what action they take, for what color your skin radiates has more say than a life itself. A joke.
Everyone let out a relieved sigh for she didn't have a gun, because if she could grab this much of attention single-handedly with an umbrella and a key chain, the damage would have caused a death on that train. If she held an exceptional tool it would have been a matter of time before we can tick the criterion of another white killer.
The more we let these news by-pass us, the more these things will be normalized in our society. If we let these things by-pass us the lesser everyone will fight off the feeling for the urge to rebel. More and more we discard these as 'happenings during 2020' the more it will happen in 2021. The endless cycle will have us stuck for protesting for days without a proper cause or a result.
Looking at Lushchinskaya, the subway Susan or Karen or whatever common name you give her, is probably the reason why Trump still holds power, a power much greater than we realize to put a stop to racism in his own country but decides otherwise.
